Lamont Harp: A Handcrafted Medieval Gaelic Wire-Strung Harp

The Lamont Harp is a stunning interpretation of one of Scotland’s most famous and historically significant Gaelic wire-strung harps. Dating back to the 15th century, the original Lamont Harp, also known as the Clàrsach Lumanach, is preserved in the National Museum of Scotland and stands as a symbol of Scotland’s rich musical heritage. This harp was passed down through the noble Robertson family of Lude and is one of the few surviving medieval Gaelic harps, alongside the Queen Mary Harp and the Trinity College Harp.

While this modern harp is not an exact replica of the original instrument in the museum, it represents an improved version of the same design. Due to the original harp being damaged in several places, this reconstruction incorporates thoughtful modifications to prevent similar breakages, ensuring a stronger, more durable instrument. Despite these enhancements, the harp captures the essence of the original. While historical evidence suggests that the original instrument was most likely strung with gold for its unparalleled resonance and richness of tone, this modern version uses brass and silver strings as an affordable alternative that still delivers excellent sound quality. Although brass and silver offer a bright, clear tone with rich overtones, the finest tonal qualities can still only be fully realized with gold strings, which remain the ideal for those seeking the most authentic sound experience. The harp’s hollowed-out soundbox, carved from a single block of wood, allows for powerful projection and deep resonance, offering the full, sonorous sound musicians expect from a Gaelic wire-strung harp. The tenon mortise frame construction of the original is faithfully replicated in this version, ensuring an authentic recreation of the instrument’s tone.

Crafted using traditional techniques, the harp’s mortised joints are designed to withstand the tension of the strings without the use of modern adhesives. This construction method not only enhances the harp’s durability but also honors the ancient methods used by harp-makers hundreds of years ago. The harp is adorned with brass fittings, carefully designed to replicate the original’s intricate metalwork, which was celebrated for its craftsmanship.

The Lamont Harp is perfect for traditional musicians and historical music enthusiasts seeking an instrument that evokes the sound and spirit of medieval Gaelic music. Whether for performance, study, or personal enjoyment, this harp offers an opportunity to engage with the rich cultural history of Scotland and Ireland. It is a powerful and evocative instrument, just as relevant today as it was in the royal courts and gatherings of centuries past.
